Dave Houghton Appointed as Zimbabwe Head Coach 2022

Zimbabwe has been having a bad time for many years. The country has suffered a final setback in field cricket. The country is not in the top ten in any format in the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings. Zimbabwe Cricket has recently decided to roll out a coaching panel. The Zimbabwe cricket board has appointed former captain Dave Houghton as its new head coach for 2022.

The situation in Zimbabwe is so bad that now it is not possible to take part in ICC tournaments regularly. They could not take part in the latest 2019 ODI World Cup and 2021 T20 World Cup.

The T20 World Cup will be held in Australia this year. Zimbabwe will have to play in the qualifying round if they want to play there. But before that, the team has been whitewashed in the T20 near Afghanistan at home. They also lost the ODI series.

Before the T20 World Cup qualifiers, such results have left Zimbabwe cricket thinking. A tough qualifier awaits Zimbabwe in July this year. So now the team wants to hand over the responsibility to the new head coach. On Tuesday (June 14), the country’s cricket board announced the selection of former captain Dave Houghton as its coach.

However, this is not the first time that Dave Houghton has coached Zimbabwe in the 1999 World Cup. In that World Cup, Zimbabwe lost to India and South Africa in the group stage and got into the Super Six. Dave Houghton’s coaching career is also quite rich. He has coached at county clubs such as Derbyshire and Middlesex.

Zimbabwe made their Test debut in 1992. Dave Houghton was the captain in that Test. In all, he captained Zimbabwe in 16 ODIs and four Tests. He played 63 Tests for Zimbabwe and scored 1484 runs. Dave Houghton has fielded 63 times in ODIs where he has collected 1530 runs.

Zimbabwe extended the contract with the current head coach of Zimbabwe, Lalchand Rajput, last March. However, Zimbabwe has changed its mind after the defeat against Afghanistan. Zimbabwe Cricket could remove Rajiput from the post of head coach and appoint him as technical director.
