CSA Sends Proposal to IPL Franchises On Investing in T20 League
A few days ago, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced the organization of a franchise league. CSA will also sell franchises for the six-team tournament. Four teams in the Indian Premier League IPL have expressed interest in buying a team in CSA T20 League.
The South African franchise league will take place in January 2023. Four IPL franchises Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals have expressed interest in buying a team in this league. A consortium of English cricketer Kevin Pietersen has also expressed interest in buying the team, according to various media reports.
CSA has twice before launched a franchise league. In 2016, they hosted the Global Twenty20 League and the newly disbanded Mjansi Super League. However, neither of the two tournaments saw any success in the end.
However, CSA believes that it will be successful if the IPL teams buy franchises in this tournament. They also want to establish it as one of the best T20 tournaments in the world.
Of the four IPL franchises, Rajasthan Royals have already invested outside the IPL. They hold the majority of shares in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Barbados Royals.
Meanwhile, new investments are coming in Royals. Four well-known athletes from the US have already announced that they will invest in the franchise. The other three IPL franchises Delhi, Chennai and Mumbai are going to invest in a tournament outside India for the first time.
According to Cricket South Africa, hosting their new franchise tournament will cost 56 million in the first 10 years. And at this point their income will be only 30 million dollars. However, CSA will be able to share the dividend with the franchisees as it has already sold the TV rights to the tournament to Super Sport. That’s why franchises are encouraged to invest in the South African tournament.
